Free video editing on Windows

Edit video in Clipchamp: built into Windows 11, and in the Microsoft Store for Windows 10. Import, cut, music, captions, and export to MP4.

Windows Movie Maker was discontinued. Use Clipchamp instead: it is built into Windows 11, and on Windows 10 you install it from the Microsoft Store.

Open Clipchamp from the Start menu. If it is not there, search for Clipchamp in the Microsoft Store and install it.

Import

  1. Create a new project.
  2. Import the videos from the computer, or drag them onto the timeline.

Cut

  1. Select a clip on the timeline.
  2. Drag the ends, or cut out what should not stay in the film.
  3. Put the clips in the order you want to show.

Music

  1. Add an audio track under the video.
  2. Lower the music where someone is speaking.
  3. Use music that is marked for use, not a song downloaded from YouTube.

Captions

  1. Add captions from the text menu.
  2. Write a short line on each clip, and check that the text is readable on the background.

Export to MP4

  1. Click export.
  2. Choose MP4 at 1080p, unless the file has to be smaller.
  3. Save the file on the computer before you delete the project.

Stuck? Bring it to the lab in Rekhasim.
