A slow computer: what to check before you upgrade

Find the load before you replace a part

A slow computer is not always a finished computer. On Windows 10 and Windows 11 it often starts with software in the background, a full disk, or an old drive. Go through this order before you buy a new machine.

1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
2. On Processes, sort by CPU, memory, and disk. A process that stays high for a long time is the suspect.
3. On Startup, turn off apps you do not need at boot. Leave the antivirus and the tools you actually open every day.

Free space and the drive

Keep at least 15% of the Windows drive free. Open Settings, System, Storage, and turn on Storage Sense. Empty the Recycle Bin and the Downloads folder.

If the drive is an old spinning disk, moving to an SSD is the upgrade you feel first: startup, opening apps, and saving files. More memory helps when Task Manager shows the RAM full most of the time, often under 8 GB on a computer in daily use.

Updates and extra software

• Install the Windows updates that are already waiting, then restart. An update stuck halfway leaves the machine heavy.
• Remove apps you do not use, from Installed apps.
• Keep one antivirus. Two at once slow the computer and get in each other's way.
• In the browser, close old tabs and remove extensions you have not opened in months.

When a tip is not enough

If the computer shuts off by itself, beeps at startup, or the disk shows a health warning, stop working on it with files that have no backup. Bring it to the lab for a check before you replace a board or a drive.
